Ice Cream in a Bag
Ice Cream in a Bag and an IEW Writing Lesson for students of all ages
Our family learned to do this at Camp Holiday Trails. Try this yummy project on your first co-op day or the first day of your new year of home-schooling. It is a perfect "accompaniment" to the easy writing lesson on the astonishing history of ice cream.
Here's how to use this lab:
1. Read the story at the top. (Don't say the numbers.)
2. Have the kids write THREE key words for each sentence and record them next to the number of the sentence. (Thus the numbered sentences.)
3. Make the ice cream. Discuss the Why Does it Work? section.
4. Eat the ice cream.
5. Now, have the kids re-write (little ones can re-tell) the history of ice cream using only their key words. No peeking at the original paragraph! Students should be able to reproduce the paragraph they read with most of the details intact. Encourage creative decoration! This is the time to use strong verbs and quality adjectives. Personalities should shine through the writing. Have them read their work aloud. See how different each paragraph is, but all are about the same topic.
