FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)
What's the weather like out there in Virginia?
It varies. Hot in the Summer, Cold in the Winter.
Do you really keep live ants, butterflies, frogs, etc. there in your store?
No, we don't. We aren't set up for that, nor would we have the time to keep all the little critters warm and fed. There is a coupon included when you order anything that would be called "live material". You'll send the coupon to the supplier and they will in turn, ship your pets out to you. There is usually a very reasonable shipping charged involved.
Is the term "Lap Book" really copyrighted?...and what does that mean?
Yes, "Lap Book" is copyrighted because Tammy and Cyndy wrote a book specifically on the topic and the copyright is registered with the Federal Government. Like with any book, copyrights come into play simply to protect the work that was done by the author to bring that book into existence. Please feel free to read our copyright/trademark statement. We've had a lot of questions on why we copyrighted the term. Hopefully, this document will help answer some of those questions.
Do you carry any products that mention or teach evolution?
There are a few of our products which have evolutionary content. A few of the Usborne books contain evolution code words (billions of years, etc). The "How to Dissect Book" has evolutionary content. In the past, we have made an effort to flag the books we know contain this type of material. We may miss a few. It is certainly not intentional.
Then why do you carry such books?
Good question. There are a couple of answers. 1) We don't feel it necessary to "throw the baby out with the bathwater. Many of these books have very good information and aren't going to throw it out simply because it says "billions of years". 2) Our children are going to be confronted with the evolutionary arguement when they go to college or out into the world. We feel that a child should be prepared to have an answer when it does. He/She should be able to tell why they believe what they believe?
Any ideas how to deal with the book when we get one?
Sure. You can remove the offending page if you like. Or, you can take the time to use this as a teachable moment. "This is what we believe and why we believe it. And THIS is what we don't believe and why we don't believe it." When I was in college, there were a number of students who, when presented with information that was counter to what they had been told by their parents while growing up asked the question "What ELSE did my parents lie about?". Bad situation to be in.
I'm having trouble getting my 104 Lap Book Ideas CD to run properly.
We have had a few glitches (mostly with XP machines) that occur when you click on the program icon. In some cases the program appears to not fucntion at all. Nothing happens. Zip. Zilch. Nada. We have devised a fix that has worked on the 3 machines where this problem has occurred. You can download the fix here, follow the directions and see if that does the trick.
Do the dissection specimens need to be refrigerated?
It isn't absolutely necessary to refrigerate them. However, it doesn't hurt them either (and besides, there's nothing quite like an ice cold, clammy dissection specimen to liven up your anatomy class...). If you are going to put the specimens in the fridge, I would suggest a double Zip Lock bag to keep any stray odors out of your food.
